Everything starts with the cover image.
One of our regular tasks is preparing cover images for a client's e-books and trade book promotions. There are 2 ways to go:
1. Find an image on a stock image site and purchase the proper license.
FeaturePics.com has Royalty-Free Business Extension, Editorial and Commercial Publications licenses. These are defined on the site and one of them will surely fit your needs.
Choose the right one to meet your requirements.
If you are not satisfied with any of the standard licenses, we will work with you to issue you a special license that covers your particular needs.
Such a license can cost you $20-$80 depending on the usage.
2. Commission a custom illustration
If you have a very particular idea and want a custom illustration, it is easy to address your request. Please contact us at our Contact page.
If you are lost in all the "size/dots per inch" requirements and want to have simple basic directions for your cover:
The cover image should be a vertical rectangle shape with height/width ratio in the range of 1.4 to 1.6. If math is not your thing a 1.6 ratio example is 1000 pixels horizontal and 1600 pixels vertical. A typical paperback is 4.25 inches horizontal and 6.75 inches vertical. Each publisher may have slightly different requirements, so be sure to get specifics for your publisher.
The cover cannot be a greyscale image; it must be color (RGB mode).
Print and web requirements are different, so you will need two files: one for print and one for web use:
For print: Minimum 300 dpi (dots per inch) – let’s say 5.5″ x 8″ - 1,650 pixels x 2,400 pixels (1.45 ratio).
For web: 72 dpi (dots per inch) - Maximum of 2000 pixels on the longest side is preferred by some publishers.
Don't be afraid of the "dpi" requirements. The only parameter you need to be concerned is "pixels". We will do the rest.
Read the "Print size" note at FeaturePics.com below each image.
Use any graphical software to adjust the resolution to 300 dpi and you will obtain the same dimensions as reported on the website. And if you find an image that is perfect in every way except for the aspect ratio, the image can be cropped by almost anyone. If you need to change an aspect ratio you may need the help of a graphics expert.
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements:
Please uncheck the "resample image" option. Resizing keeps the pixel dimensions (the number of pixels in the image) the same and simply changes the size at which the image will print, while resampling physically changes the number of pixels in the image. By default, the Resample Image option is checked.
To give you ideas about "Mass market / Trade paperbacks / Novels" cover page requirements, the following are representative, but you will find others as well; consult your publisher to be sure.
- Mass market books have to be 4-1/4″ x 7″ - 1275 pixels – 2100 pixels
- Trade paperbacks 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ to 6″ x 9″ range – 1650 pixels – 2700 pixels.
- Novels 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ 1650 pixels – 2550 pixels.
Now that you have learned that all stock images and custom illustrations can be provided in an appropriate size range and the image size IS NOT An ISSUE, why not concentrate on your real task, "VISUAL MESSAGE"?
